Save Our Newbies!

Before I go any further, I'm going to criticise myself for using the word "newbie" in the title. It may just be me being daft, but personally I think the word "newbie" is a bit harsh. It depends on what context it is being used, of course , but someone calling another person a newbie because they messed up in CS, that's wrong. In the case that someone asks "Are you a newbie?", meaning, "Are you new to CS?", that's okay, but I feel a great need to differentiate between the two...'newbie' is not an insult.

That's what I'm going to concetrate on in this article, people using the word "newbie" as an offensive word, something that is very naughty indeed.

Various words to describe someone new to CS, but for some reason, also used as an insult to describe someone who isn't very good at CS:

"You F*****G n00b! can't u even aim properly?"
"OMG, you n00b, you're so crap"

For example.

The CS veterans of today are the parents of these new players. We must accept them into our home, and cherish them. Without our love and support they will wither and die. If you do not support these people when they are learning a skill, they will not be able to do it to their full potential, and if you insult them while they are doing it...How on earth are they going to give CS the future it deserves?

Thats right, those 'n00bs' are Counter-Strike's future, so if you want CS to succeed after 4Kings go to their Nursing Homes, then you'd better be nice to them, help them, give them advice. If you don't, how can you expect the community to grow and prosper? It won't, that's the simple answer, but still some people forget that we were all new to the game once.

I went out into the community and spoke to some of the more well known 'n00bs' among us:

Raider (Uninspired)
"Well, it's a very two sided story this, for us 'pros' having a newbie on the server can be immensely frustrating, as you are left waiting for 3 or so minutes which gets boring. But you have to look at it from the newbie's point of view...how are they gonna improve if everyone is nasty to them. They are not gonna think the community is very good, so I think newbie servers are a very good idea."

TheGenius (Four-Kings)
"The pleasant newbie who just wants a hand is ok, but when you get 20 a day emailing you for trials, or asking how they can be good in a week, and why 4K cheat....I think newbies should be playing newbie servers!"

ICEMAN (Uninspired)
"I think the new players get a lot harder time than they deserve sometimes. At the end of the day we all start at the beginning and go through the same things, but I think the newer players should stick to the newbie servers till they are well established at CS!"

Symposium (Fusion)
"Everyone had to start somewhere, we were all n00bies at one point, give 'em a break!"

Myers (UKT Staff)
"Well, we were all newbies at one time, but what really gets me, is when the 'l33t' consider anyone worse than them n00bs, n00b is a term for someone who is new to a computer game, when cs2 comes out, we will all be n00bs. Yet you will still find the better players insulting others after a month or so. In my opinion, it's one of the saddest insults in cs because 99% of the time the person you're applying that insult too is not a 'n00b' at all."

There you have it then, the opinions of some of our better known players on the subject of Newbie-Abuse. They show both positive and negative and negative tendencies towards newbies. Veteran players who have been around the scene for a while are generally quite tolerant towards newbies, as long as the newbies are simply looking for help. They don't however, want to get constantly nagged by newbies to be allowed into clans, for trials, tips and so on. Believe me, from past experiences on StarCraft, once you've annoyed people it's very hard to get back into their good books.

I think both sides need to give a little here....newbies can be a little over bearing, but 'veterans' also tend to be a bit harsh towards them, the balance is in the middle and I don't think it's much to ask. Especially not the people who make fun of newbies, and use the word n00b to insult people. That's not on in my opinion and to use the term 'n00b' to insult someone says alot more about you than it does about them.

When I ran a past gaming site, we had an article submitted that was also on the subject of newbies. He gives you advice about what and what not to do as newbie:

*The Following text is by "Pughey" I take no credit for it!*

"One thing you definitely shouldn’t do is be cocky. Don’t provoke someone into killing you by calling him/her a camper or crap; you’re the one that will pay. Just play the game, you are playing to enjoy not to get angry, the same as everyone else, make the game fun by doing as best as you can.

If you get a kill, whatever you do, don’t gloat, this goes back to the cockiness rule you will make new enemies – you want friends ;).

Follow these rules and you will over time get better. Then, one day, you will see a newbie and be able to kill him repeatedly just as you were and it is at this point you should try and join a clan, just ask clan members if they are recruiting or if you are noticed by a clan member, he or she will notify you how to join. Anyway, that’s enough from me, and remember; if you’re gonna play, play nice."

***End of "Pughey's" article***

As you may have guessed, I'm all against calling people 'n00bs' when they're obviously not. Somehow you get into an argument with someone, insults are flying high and low, and then one person calls the other a n00b...this is what really annoys me sometimes. It's a crap insult, yet it's the most commonly used one, it always aggravates me when I see people getting called n00bs, as most often, it is the n00bs themselves doing it!

If there's anything you should take away from this article, it's this:

  1. Be nice to New-Players!
  2. New-Players be nice to others, don't be annoying.
  3. Don't use the word n00b as an insult, or, just don't use it!
  4. Be nice, and have fun!

Most of the newbie bashing that goes on is done by people that aren't that good either, but they've been around for a while so they have no excuse for it. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Newbie = Someone new to a game who asks for help and is NOT a t**t

n00b = someone who is ignorant and never listens to advice. Then shouts at you for not helping them. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Good article antmoo, but you forgot the more insulting prefix that is added to "n00b". When put together, it creates the ultimate CS insult, well, not really:

F**ker/ing N00b.

:) good going Antmoo, keep 'em coming.

I dont care if a newbie is 1-20, but if he is doing gay things, like trying to jump on a box without using duck-jump for the whole round, or if he is just camping in his own spawn, or somewhere people dont often look, that p***es me off alot, if a newbie is at least TRYING, weakening the enemy, he is a team mate even if his score is 1-20, but if he just camping or trying to jump on a box while getting shot at, well thats just a pointless, useless newbie. Nice article, good to see someone else feels the same way as I do.

Quite simply the word "n00b" is used by pricks for players worse than them along with "cheating w**ker" for players better than them.

The insult is usually on a "public" server, public meaning open to all player irrespective of skill level. If you dont want to play against people who are new to the game then come and play on a decent clan server of which there are plenty; and then see who the "n00bs" are.

And do people not realise what happens when u call someone a n00b? they feel s*** so they go and find some hacks so they dont stay at the bottom of the scoreboard.

i dont care about newbies or what score they have, but if everyone is dead and there are 2 n0000000000bs left on both sides when there are 4 mins and 30 secs for the round to finish, those 4mins and 30 seconds are the mnost annoying [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Nice article. But you mention that we should give newbies advice since they are the cstrike players of tomorrow. Well, we were all newbies at one point, even us veterans, and we were bashed just as much. Its tough love. Thats how you become good, you get bashed by the people who are better than you and you learn through those mistakes. Without newbie bashing, there are no counter strike players of tomorrow because they will never get any better.

I'm a newbie and i totally agree with you guys. I always try to contribute to my team and go ahead as much as i can(when i know where to go) I've only played for a couple of weeks(a couple of hours actually) and what annoys me most is the people who slack you off even if you try your hardest. I was playing cs_assault and had a wonderful score of 6-36 when people on my team began to insult me with lame remarks like 'ur gay' etc. It's just stupid!!!
Anyway. Do you people know of any newbie servers which i can play on??? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

good article atmoo. but I agree with Blitz: most of the peoble using the term n00b are indeed not "l33t" themselfs and are maby trying to rise themselfs at the expence of others. My clan took on a scrim against east cost clan, and us comming from the nice and comfy land of iceland. They had a slight adventiges pingwise. But we needed the practice ( we were entering cal ). And in the end we lost both halfs 5-7 and 8-4 (bearing in mind the time was 5am our time) and they called n00bs and were mighty glad for with there victory. And we wanderd if all us clans were like that? :/ But we got a rematch the day after and we won that game with ease. So we warn´t that much n00bs after all. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

u mentioned that we have to be nice and tolerate new people otherwise the community wont expand and the future of cs will die...well if u would have collected all the facts u would c that the peak of cs has come and gone and the community is dropping in numbers since version 1.1 and by the time 4kings r in old peoples homes we will be in virtual cs anyways :) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I've been playing for a few days, as soon as i knew that a N00b was a beginner i put it in my name..everyone's warned .. since i've put N00b in my name I don't get much crap from other players. I did encounter 1 very aggresive player who was having a go at me, but i just threw it back in his face..to my surpise the others stood up for me and told the guy to shut up or be kicked from the server..
Guess my point is..a Newbie should put newbie or n00b in his name..when others know you're new to the game they'll be much more understanding of your faults

The frustration will start when others do not know you're a newbie..if they expect support from you and you don't deliver they'll get p***ed..if they don't expect a thing since you're new and you do manage to give some support they'll just be pleased with you.. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I agree with JM[N00B] that newbies should put some form of noob in their name, or keep it as Player. It makes it alot more obvious to those of us who can hold our own (not neccesarily l33t). If they have their name as something cool like DoomSnake, or if they have a fake clan tag in front of their name, thats just plain misleading.
Now my question is, I've been playing for over 2 1/2 months now, and I can keep up with the best for the most part, sometimes I have my off days though.
So heres the actual question: when does someone lose the title of noob? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

its just a f***in game and if people have to go so far as to classify other players because they suck one day, then ur gay. or if they just started playin cs and someone else has been playin since it came out, than obviously ur better than them. u dont have to rub it in their faces.

plenty of people hav called me a noob and quite frankly i think it is stupid because the very next round i kill them. and it is usually with a knife or a handgun. hows that for noob.

but for all the beginners out there one line of advice. if someone call u a noob, dont take it as an insult, especially if they just give advice or try to help u, but if they are constantly making fun of u, i say fight back. if, for instance, they make a racist comment asumming your not that race, say u are. it really makes them feel bad. and if u really want to p*** them off, and they have their own server, there are lots of good hacks out there, that aren't detectable, and us should use on to own them. I f***ING noobs not cos they are s*** players, not cos im an elitist but because theyve ruined cs like every other game ive played.

Basically noobs whine and whine and whine....oooo you cant jump and shoot me with a pistol...oooo you cant run and shoot cos i cant hit you (!)....ooo you cant switch weapons quickly...

Unfortunately most people are noobs who by definition dont know wtf they are talking about. The valve team listen to the majority who are almost entirely noobs. Therefore we get stupid ideas the noob keep spaming put into practice and the pros who know what they are talkign about and know what would improve gameplay are ignored...

CS is basically perfect for a noob now and boring for anyone else rather than the fast game it used to be.

You cant move and shoot and your only accurate when on your arse ie) the only time a noob can stand a chance of hitting you - what a coincidence...ALL NOOBS SHOULD DIE YOUVE RUINED THE ENTIRE GAME

In addition noobs kept saying that the recoil in 1.3 was unrealistically accurate.....if that is so how come ive read real interviews with real marksmen (in real life) who say the changes made in 1.4 actually made the game LESS realistic.....

other games i used to enjoy but ruined by noobs:
