Is there a throbbing between your legs?

Posted by Valar` at 12:12, 6/4/2005

If there is, I'm hoping it's because you're a biker ;-) This column again stems from shoutbox conversations had recently, it is also NOT CS related before some nugget (ta mike) starts b***hing. It's community related. So ner.

Anyways, i've got a bike, Scrappy has a bike, Fanto has a bike. How many others on this site have a motorbike, because I figured it'd be a decent idea to try and sort a UKT rideout/weekend thingey if theres enough of us :-)

I'm near Cambridge, Scraps is London, I guess Fanto is aswell. Anyones welcome but its obviously easier for people in our neck of the woods, or we could simply arrange to meet somewhere in the midlands which is a nice ride from any part of the country.

Anyways, get posting what you've got/intend to get, and any ideas on what we could do or where to go. If there's enough interest I'll get something sorted.

Please don't suggest attending a LAN. Although saying that, we only need 2 more.... ;-)

(that last line really is a joke)

But yeah wish I had an R1 (next door neightbour has one) and she said shes went over 160 on it!!!

The problem with me is, that i love to go fast, be it in a car, on a bike, one ice skatez! im dangerous! I drove a CBR600 and its a flying machine, really really quick it was race tuned and everything. I could borrow that again off me cousin then get the boat from belfast to newcastle or something and then race down. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

mountain bikes greater than..... nothing?

you're so right! ;-)

my zx-6r is nothing particularly special, its not tuned or anything, its pretty much a bike you can get from any dealer. it does 0-120 in 12 seconds and thats only 3rd gear, fastest i've had so far is 156mph (in reality probably more like an acutal speed of 140) on the clock with 750 or so revs to the redline and thats with a double-bubble screen, i just ran out of road :| [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I think it's pretty dangerous though for people to start motorcycling nowadays without some other aquired road sense, either from driving experience or experience of cycling in traffic and city streets. Particularly as research has shown that the incidence of accidents in motorcyclists has increased since the law making helmets mandatory, almost certainly because of the reduced field of vision and sound deadening effect wearing a full face helmet causes.

I've heard some real horror stories, 16 year old lad who lives round the corner from me went out for his first ride on it, got knocked off by the A6 and died. It is a lot more dangerous than cycling or driving if you don't really know what you're doing, so it's worth getting some other experience before you start biking.

And here's Scrappy on a bike:

Who care's about mpg though mine is about 40 like Vals... it's not about travelling cheaply to work and quickly. It's about riding it for pleasure and the thrill you get from it. If you've not experienced the feeling you get when accelerating from 0-120 in 12 secs like val says then you've not lived. The rush baby! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Valar, why did you call me a dickhead? Like Scrappy said the rush of riding a bike is immense, something I'd like to try, I merely stated that personally I don't think it would be right for me to experience the rush of 0-120 in 12 seconds with someone on the back of the bike, something you seem to agree with. So why am i dickhead? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Rekkiem, I started on a CB600F hornet. (although I was riding 125s before). It's a nice easy bike to ride but has a shed loads of power when u need it. Can pick up a decent second hand one for about £2500. Not sure about servicing costs cause i could never be arsed with my old bike, sure Val can give u some idea. you can do a 5 day intensive course for ur licence that costs about £500 depending on where you live. Insurance... well depends how old u are, if the bike is garaged it brings the insurance right down. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Rekkiem, i would go for a second hand suzuki gs500f. They do have quite a bit of power plus they wouldnt cost you an arm and a leg (around 2k second hand) the engine size is allot smaller so insurance will take that into consideration.

If you crash its your fault, and also lessons? AAJAHAHAHAHAHAHA! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

for a first bike you cant go wrong with an old cbr600. u can get them cheap, theyre still quick but really easy to ride.

seik, let me explain. u can ride a bike slowly, anyone who does 120+ everywhere anyway is a plank. you have to ride given the conditions, taking risks is pointless. if those conditions involve having someone on the back you just dont go silly.

its not like im a screaming nutcase with a deathwish, they're idiots who should be shot. i just getting out and going fast when i can, my first priority on that thing is staying a live. that and the new paint job i just had done :-)

As for the point on helmats, i can still hear cars behind me and know they are there, but why would i have to? If you use a proper riding technique, there is no way that you should have any unnasty surprises while > 40 mph.

Of course there's such a thing as traffic on a bike. when the schools are back it takes me 10-15 mins longer to goto work. As for using the proper riding technique and not having any nasty surprises thats bs. You have no control over other road users whatever speed ur doing, no control over any oil that might be on a corner or braking spot. Doesn't matter what bike u ride all these issues effect all riders. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
