Guild me to the Guild Wars!

Guild Wars

Never fear the WazMeister is back with another pure pedigree spelling, grammar and endless essay mistakes review!!!!!
It’s been awhile so for those who don’t know me just read all the replies to my other Columns and your get a drift of me. Now on to the review!

This is my 2nd attempt at writing something for Guild Wars, at first I tried going at a different angle and doing a Professional wannabe magazine review but instead I want to go down the old road and give my weird opinion on the game.

Five years in the making! NCSOFT and ArenaNet present to you their ORPG (Online Role Playing Game) with no Monthly Fees!!! No sneaky little Russian deals of “Pay 50p and get better ITEMS!!!” None of that “were bring out 50 expansions just to fix a BUG. Infact ArenaNet have stated “free” steaming updates of new content and patches and to even go by their word they have recently announced 2 new Areas to play in which are coming soon! Now if that’s not more awesome than a pulsating ingrown toe nail on your friends big toe seeping green then I don’t know what is.

Now with it having no monthly Fee you must obviously think “How do they afford all the server power to handle all these players!!!” I wish I could know the answer from the developers as it still stuns me now so if you know let us all know . Guild Wars currently has six professions which are the usual Warrior, Ranger, Monk, Elementalist, Mesmer and Necromancer with 150 unique skills per character now that sounds a lot and it is, I think I only have a about 50 at the moment and that’s well enough! Every time I get a new skill I run to my front room in front of the TV which my dad is watching and dance while singing “I got a new skill! I got a new Skill!”

You get to choose two professions for your char a Primary and a Secondary, at the moment I play as a Monk/Elementist, I run around as a bald headed Healer thinking I’m some jet Li ready to pummel anyone in my way with a 4cm punch. With in the game you begin in Ascalon a lovely area with green grass, Buetiful Rivers rearing to scrub that welted stained semen on your body and towns full of other stuff. This area is basically like a Tutorial area with a few missions until your ready to do a Story Line mission which unlocks more areas and storie line, Once you have completed the first part of the story you skip two years ahead and your in Old Ascalon (basically Ascalon but in ruins). Here your in the big game rearing to go out and see the big world! Or is it big?
Guild wars works different from most RPG games you play such as WOW, SWG, EQ and so forth. You have towns which are public areas for all players but as soon as you step out of the town you’re in an instanced area where it’s just you or your party members and that’s it. No more twiddling the thumbs waiting in queue to kill that beast for a mission that earns you 60k gold and rare weapons that makes you get a stonking hardon that’s shredding your trousers from the stretch and making you tuck it in the waist so your mum doesn’t notice that bulge.

This idea has strong points and weak, strong as the idea suggested above and keeps lag down but bad because sometimes you feel you’re in a empty world unless you’re in a party which can be hard for non story line missions. As for story line missions its like nothing I’ve seen before in a online game, you do the mission and get actual movies to watch and unravel more Map to explore etc and I got to say this map/game area is so dam big its making me get the compass out and find the way out the threshold into my back garden. The world seems to be massive and takes forever just to run around exploring it all! Remember as I say all this with it being FREE once you bought it from retail! No monthly fee as I swear it’s big as EQ or WOW…….
When I say big as WOW I mean maybe in world size but in content size and much more wow beats GW hands down but you get for what you pay for.

If I went to an ugly prostitute and asked “How much would it cost for me to get a slap and a tickle and for you to spit on my balls and twizzle a mushroom around them” I’m guessing it be a lot cheaper than a fit prostitute. This applies to GW(guild wars) and WOW (world of warcraft) Guild wars has missions, get them done level up and then do war against other guilds while WOW has missions, in depth crafting, PvP and a lot of other things to do but at a price.
Guild Wars easily made me quit Matrix Online and WOW as it fills my taste buds for what I seek and it has no attached bill like an attached tug nut which you can’t remove from your arse hair with that coat hanger.

Now GW has a lot more to it than what I said above, you can craft new armour and get cool rare items and do some awesome quests! Some quests really get you involved and to do certain objects and bonuses, for example one mission we had to fix a catapult to knock out some Charr (big beasts with big slongs). The crafting is basically get the Materials, your gold and visit the vendor to buy the Armour but what’s so good about GW is you can salvage materials and get rare Runes which upgrade certain parts of your armour/weapons, there really is much more to this game than the eye can see! I been playing for awhile now and I’m lvl 14 and there is plenty I do not know about and lots of area I have not explored yet. You can’t beat jumping on a TeamSpeak server with your friends, meeting up and doing some missions together while constantly slagging each other down on the comms “My lvl 12 WARRIOR will kill your lvl 14 NECRO with 1 hit! Or My sword of Viagra is better than your wand of Vietnam”, just some examples of geek ness.

Main Aspect-

With the game being called Guild Wars there is obviously a reason why and that’s Player V Player (PvP). You can create guilds at later levels and compete against other guilds for a ranking in the official ladder, get guild halls for meets or just plain go around getting a name for your self by being smacktards and going at war with every other guild. So far I have just experienced random grouping PvP and I must say it’s totally skill in this rather than level you are. The max level is 20 which in my eyes is best idea ever… get to lvl 20 and compete for wins with skill not by ganking someone 50 levels below you ala WOW. Later if I’m not mistaken you get guild arenas and can have some great tactic and strategy wars which I totally can not wait for.
I can imagine it now running into battle screaming “Were gonna gank you NOOBS WHOOT! WHOOT!!” and then getting owned within 4 seconds of loading on the screen, more fun and excitement than chucking a marshmallow on a filthy stick and over burning it on a bon fire for it to fall in and dissolve resulting in you wanting to cry or try pick it back up for that extra crispy taste. That’s the big hype for me and the competitive side of things; I can see my self now psyching my self up for a guild war for a higher ranking on the table.
Taking my clothes off in my bedroom to be standing in my skiddy pants sweating and doing push ups and saying to my self “Yea! Come on! You can do this, they nothing but noobs! This is your Game! Your ownage time!” while running up and down the stairs for that extra adrenaline then jumping on teamspeak with nothing but a head band and saying to my fellow guild mates in a deepened ard nut voice “Lose this and your all out! Its judgement time Boys! Loose this and you all owe me 5 quid via paypal and no more naked webcam sessions!

With guild wars having no monthly fee it really is a game just to buy, try and either throw away or become addicted and be lvl 20 within 5 hours. There is so much more I could babble on about this game but to be quiet frank I want to get back in and rustle up some missions while shoving a rustler I bought from Tescos down my throat and chocking on it.
What excites me even more is when ArenaNet do produce further expansions we could possibly see some new added content for Player v Player. The guild wars engine is so versatile almost anything could work with it!

Conclusion:
Just give it a try I promise you’re like it once you’ve experienced the sheer detail in this game.

No offence, because guild wars is fairly good and this was a decent read, but guild wars really is nothing when measured to WoW. And the things that WoW does have that GW doesnt, is well worth the small amount you pay for it. Nice column.

I play both WoW, GW and SWG..... although cancelled my swg account. Took me 6months fo finally grind my toon into a jedi and the f***ers at SOE bork the game.

GW is good for a quick fix. No messing about straight into the action and it doesnt take long to do the quests and grind out a few levels before ur a hard nut.

I play WoW only because i have a few friends that do and the game bores me slightly and its all about who has the best this and that and as a working man i dont have the time to spend hours looking for epic items and getting my fat lvl 35 rogue ass to lvl 60 [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

WoW's a totally different kind of game to GW. It's very PvE oriented and if you don't have a good group of competent mates you will get bored because you absolutely cannot do half the things worth doing in the game solo. That kind of forced interaction is w**k, but there you go.

The PvP aspect of WoW again is totally different to gw. GW wants it to be frantic and action based, WoW's trying to set it in a persistent world but they have no real rewards because ultimately you lose nothing except time PvPing (lots of it if you're a warlock and have to farm shards to be able to compete).

GW would be great if they expanded the roleplaying character aspect and allowed for an ongoing character development. As it stands you feel as though you've pretty much stagnated as levelling gives you very little rewards, you're ultimately trying to unlock skills. Had they expanded that PvE aspect of the character development, it would have been fantastic. Though as it stands it's still great. Character combinations due to skill and spell choices in GW makes WoW look like a practically classes and formless game.

Anybody know what, if any, new classes and races are being touted for future WoW updates? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I was a level 58 Undead Warlock, when i quit in January, Dave.

Like DoZ said, unless you have a good group of competent mates in which to either group or form a guild with, your bound to become bored of WoW, due to the fact that alot of it is PvE orientated. Especially when your constantly doing quests with a ridiculously low drop rate. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Meridian 59 and Ultima Online stand head and shoulders above all other mmorpgs for both character development and PvP. Because you stood to lose things in them when you died - too much at times which is what ended up driving people away from them. Though as it stands meridian 59 has been played for years now, 2-3 years longer than UO; and even UO still has a large number playing around with it.

Level and class based mmorpgs are always limited because you have one character you have to work forever and a day to bring up to par and he can only ever do set things. In meridian 59 you tailored your characters stats which never changed and then worked off those to build up a character from various schools of magic or weaponcrafting, working up different skills in different levels to improve the effectiveness of those skills and gain the next level.

UO similarly used a skills based system where using a skill raised it and they both meant one thing that level based games simply cannot boast - that a player with a couple of high skills can at least compete with those who have much more - but due to the lack of time put in their development they have limited options.

Further the games were character and user skill oriented, rather than item oriented. Yes some items had magical properties, but your character was not rendered totally useless by losing your items, which could and did happen.

Had they implemented a diminishing losses idea with PvP deaths and found a way to protect the newer players better, they would be even more widely played. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

WoW sucks imo. I'm still paying for the sodding account and I haven't played it for months. Boring levelupathon. Yeah there might be quests for XP, doesn't change the fact they're apart from the odd one really repetitive - "go here, kill x, bring back y". It's not as much fun as I might have hoped playing solo, I don't really like the cartoony graphics and the chat system is so poor and cumbersome compared to the last MMORPG I played, UO, it's the largest factor in putting me off the game, although that's really a problem with all 3D MMORPGs up to now. Saying that, World War 2 Online had better chat than WoW and it was a lot simpler too, though of course that's not an RPG (unless you're one of those yank gun freak nutters who think they're in the army for real).

Or at least people chatted more in that game, in WoW you might as well be in a silent world unless you're playing with m8s. In UO you could be chatting just like you were in MSN or IRC while fighting in a dungeon, running through a forest or just about anything in the game because of the simple mouse controls, not having to press a key to talk, and that what you typed appeared above your head, so it was always obvious where a person saying something was.

You could only speak to people on the same 'screen' as you (as it was 2d), but this was much better I thought as all chat had a localised feel, and you didn't have channels or ignore. If you wanted to speak to someone in private you had to go somewhere private, ie where there weren't other players on the screen - and that's reallistic.

Anyway, it was an infinitely more social game than WoW was.

If an rpg is going to get me hooked again like UO did I think it's going to need a control and chat system that's similar, though that will take some innovation to pull off in a 3d engine. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I just put anarchy online back on trying to re-live my old childhood youth days. Thing is, everyone that I used to play with has quit, and theres no doomsiren to twink me rediculously. So I'm getting bored pretty quick with it since theres a lot of PvE grinding for XP cos theres 200 lvls for your char.

I'm on 53 now and bored as hell. I'm glad AO is free now because its not as good as i remember it. But still, its better than WoW by far even though there is a certain lack of PvP in AO (although you could attack an NPC guard and do one to get yourself flagged for PvP, but you normally get killed by some trader 10 levels under you who casts a nano that takes off all your skills pretty much).

I played GW during the open whatever it was, I liked it but it wasnt really that inspiring and i got bored pretty quick because I found just doing missions boring and repetitive. In AO my martial artist can run around on his own and take things well above his level on so I like exploring a bit and dont have to worry about dying.

In short I'm not a fan of any of them anymore. Hopefully battle for middle earth will be better than all of them.

Also, if anyone wants to put AO for a try then I'm on RK2 and I'll do some twinking for you or start a new char with you cos I'm bored :( [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Then watching all the low level players trying to take him on and getting raped. I could never work out why the Horde NPC's wouldnt attack him, but thats what made it fun. ;D [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

agreed del the chat system in WOW isnt the best and the level upathon as you call it can get really tedious at times altho its all over for me now but i assure you the game has come on leaps and bounds especially the combat.PVP is everywhere at the moment as everyone is after more and more honour points and quite frankly the competition of playing other guys n gals out there and beating them down with my uber mage is just great fun.

As far as combat goes there is no mmporg that offers better even if a just turned level 60 fights a seasoned lvl 60 with alot of nice items it only means the
guy whos been playing it longer has an edge in the battle but its nothing major good skills can overcome any opponent ( also a bit of luck doesnt go a miss)

I moved to one of the new servers that got set up and my only downfall of the game is the lack of things to do when your not instancing when your lvl 60.The honour system is good but there needs to be a lot more content for the lvl 60 players who wana just do something but on their own. It'll never be the best for combat because as Doz said, there's no huge consequences for losing.

In UO if you died in PVP combat the person that killed you would loot every single item you were carrying of any worth from your corpse, sometimes weeks of work in game, or even worse if you were carrying something really valuable like a house deed.

And PVP in UO was great. A 7x GM (equivalent of the maximum level in leveling MMORPGs) with all the bees knees equipment and items could easily be killed by a far lesser player with only a couple of good skills and very poor equipment, either by greater skill, strategic advantage (eg surprise) or preparation.

A couple of very weak opponents that were barely more than newbie characters could take down a 7x GM if they caught them unprepared and had fast weapons.

You always had to be careful, no matter how good your character was or where you were, because in UO the situation could often change in seconds from perfectly safe to being at serious peril of losing all your stuff. Almost no PVP fight was unwinnable and when both players had characters of similar levels it came down entirely to skill. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Meridian 59 was better in my opinion, but not by much compared to pre-Trammel UO ;-)

In that not only did you drop all your items, but you also lost some hitpoints and skill/spell %s. For the more built characters that was a lot of work at times. But then there were only 80-120 people on a server at any one time generally and the world was relatively small so there was a huge community feel. There would be groups of PK hunters tearing across the land soon as someone was murdered and you could attack the murderers anywhere except in shops and inns ;-)

Probably the most complex skill system of any game without it being overly complicated too. Nostalgia, it's fantastic! [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
