A couple of months ago i quit CS, driven away by the source, the bulls*** and the stupid amount of time that it consumed from my life.
Nowadays the only time you will see me on cs is if im forced by friends to play or possibly at lan events where i get to spend more than just time shouting at people, i get to hit people too :D
WC3 although is a brilliant game still lacks in what i get out of it compared to CS, so i play just enough to get a reasonable position at LAN events. (Sorry it had to go in)
In the next few months who knows what I may do ... possibly just not playing games ever again or just shoutcasting odd matches whenever required, the thing is as sickboy so clearly knows, a game is just a game ... sure ive made a lot of good friends in the process, but its got to the point where i sit on irc just because that is what i used to do for the last 2-3 years.
My time could be spent elsewhere, but for a measly £5/hour without a degree (still in the process of getting one ^_^) is it really worth it? Even with a job fulltime, life really is just pointless, the determination in the UK of getting a job compared to somewhere like the US or even most of Europe really isn't there, I play games because to be fair, the economy in this country is in such tatters that it probably isnt worth me wasting my time doing something i would probably loathe, so i spend it doing something i may enjoy doing, whether that be going out or staying inside and playing video games.
A degree may help in the long term but in all honesty with manufacturing being removed and sent to China and the Service sector being sent to India, there really isn't anything left to do except wait for the luck chance where i can secure a £30k+ job.
I could set up a business, something i know little about and have even less experience in doing. Scary but i dont have to deal with the idiocy of a manager who doesnt know what their employees are doing and has even less of an understanding of what he is doing. This time i get to be the idiot.
Or everything could be left alone and i just stay in this purgatory like life that i lead.
This leads me to the ultimate question, what can be done .. ?
Sorry for boring you, thanks for reading :)

Im kinda in your postion minus the irc and lans (which i gave up a year n a half ago)... i just finished my first year at uni... and i spend most of my week lazing around the house watching films and then go get out n get drunk once or twice a week..... I suppose i could be doing something constructive with my time like get a job.... but mmm wait why the hell do i want a job again? our generation are going to be working well into our 70's because our life expectancy will raise signficantly in years to come (or something) .. so why rush into work? we're gonna be doing it for like 50 years anyway... so for now im quite happy to be the lazy student that bums off the uni system. i'm now 28, i've got a cv that's ridiculously long, expertise in various areas and the (proven) ability to adapt to pretty much any challenge. and it's still f***ing s***.
'the man' is an arse and deserves to have it stuck to him as often as possible. i'm sick of working for other people, plus there's also the fact that unless you happen to be one of the extremely lucky few, you will never make a fortune working for someone else.
so now i'm about to go self-employed, doing two things which i enjoy. i already have the band, it's just convenient that now it will actually constitute part of my main job, along with being a chef. it's gonna be hard work, and probably a struggle at first, but i'll be doing things i enjoy, working for myself and getting a real sense of satisfaction and reward.
you have 3 choices pretty much, you can :-
a) become the man by getting a degree and wasting away your life in a job you're unlikely to enjoy because you're forced to earn £30k+ a year just so you can get by and pay off your student loan. sounds fun.
b) work for the man in a dead end job, livng on your council estate, or even worse be on the dole because you f***ed up and wasted the most important years of your life playing a computer game....
c) work for yourself. just get some life experience first, it's invaluable. the best bit being from my point of view that i can now go out and spend loads of money on music stuff and write it off against my tax bill ;-)
i know you feel young and invincible now, but the only piece of sound advice you'll ever need comes from ferris bueller.
"life move's pretty fast, you need to stop and enjoy it once in a while" (or something along those lines).
time flies when you're having fun kids, but it moves a f*** sight faster if you're stuck in a mundane routine with no points of reference to measure it by. get out there, do stuff and enjoy it or before you know it, it'll be too late.

The fact is the majority of people in this world can only have a decent standard of living if they've got a job. Some people are lucky gits and win the lottery or have rich parents who give them whatever they could want, unfortunately im not one of those people. So unless you're one of those people you've got to accept this reality, grit your teeth and get on with it. The chances are there probably is a well paid job out there you would enjoy doing but you're not going to find it sitting on IRC. The only way you can find out what you want to eventually do is by doing. You have to accept you're gonna do jobs you dont want to do on your way to finding the perfect job for you. (unless you're lucky and find the perfect job on the first try.)
I dont want a job where it dominates my life and every waking hour im doing or worrying about work. That isn't me and im not going to do that no matter what. I don't mind working 9-5 hours as long as when ive finished work for the day I really have finished (could never stand homework in school either) so i can go home and enjoy my life (friends, family etc). If i had a choice i wouldnt work, i'd rather sit about doing nothing :). But in order to have a life in this world you need money, tis sad but true. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

It was good experiance and made some really good friends who I am still in contact with today.
I then left to go back to college and start a 2 year course in Computing.
Just completed the HND last month and will be starting Uni in September going into the 3rd year.
I like landen dont want a job where I will constantly be worried and working more than I need too.

Personally, I think people get too depressed sometimes because they don't want to do what they're doing, but they're afraid of change. If you don't want whatever job your degree will get you, do something else. If you don't know what you want to do, take a year out on a s*** job until you find something you're interested in. If you fancy starting a business, hell, find out how and give it a try.
Personally, I've just finished a Comp Sci degree, and when I started it, I originally planned to go into making computer games. But after all the horrible work I've had to do during the course of the degree, I've been a bit put off by all the problems I've had. So I'm taking a year out, getting a crappy everyday job (probably for just 3/4 days so I have a bit extra spare time), and sorting my head out to see what I want to do. then I'll either a) Do a masters, b) Get a proper job, c) Do something else. Simple really.
Lastly, to end on a nice cheesy cliche, life's not about what job you have or how much you make. It's about the people you meet, and whether you enjoy what you do (be that job, or just outside of work). [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The debt isn't so bad, i've been fairly lucky, my parents have supported me and paid my tutition fees and rent. Which has meant I havent amassed as much debt as most. Some, but not a lot. But the fact is the interest rates on a student loan are tied in with inflation. So realistically you only end up paying back what you've borrowed (unlike normal loans). And you only start paying it back once you're on £15,000 a year.
I dropped out of my first year at uni, wrong course, but worked for half a year at Axa until I started this course. I enjoyed working there and had real second thoughts about going back to uni. I spoke to tons of Career Advisors, HR people, Managers etc at Axa and they all said the same; Get a degree if you can. Being able to put a 2-1 or 1st on your cv gives you the power to apply for much higher paying jobs and gives you the opportunity for much more in terms of promotions. They all said; without a degree you're capped. You can only go so far within a company without one, if you've got a good degree you can go a lot further. So i went back and im on for a 2-1 in Computing and Information Systems. If i pull my finger out I could get a 1st, If i got a 1st i'd walk into a job pretty quickly. Every company in the world pretty much uses information systems and software, so i'll be sorted. ;] [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I also think so many people that have replied here lack ambition. Landen paints a very pretty picture, one which many of us may envy, nice car, nice house, nice wife, kids etc. right now I'm glad to say that's alien to me. I have massive dreams and aspirations, I don't want to be a number on the electoral roll. I see problems with the world and I want to change them. I would like to think that when I die I'm remembered for something I've done that is honourable and good. Note the clear difference between that and just wanting to be famous.
I'm going to University in September (having left after 2 months last November) because its a vehicle to where I want to be, its also a vehicle to have a fulfilling time, meeting lots of interesting people (mostly birds), I don't think people should really aim for a next step, they should always aim for the pinnacle. What I think you should do Maka is decide what you like and then be the very best at that. And then some. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

i'm not having a go at every single person that does a degree; just the ones who do degree in stupid things such as 'aliens' and other stupid crap like that.
My friends are older than me, not all my friends, just the ones who went to uni. They did ICT, ART and Music. The point I'm making is, their aspiration was to go to uni to party, do f*** all and come out through the grit of their teeth. One of my friends now works at mcdonalds full time and has no ambition to do anything else. This is what I can't understand; why some people waste all that money and time and not use what they've earned or to be blunt; waste all that time and money in an excuse to not work.
And btw, having a degree doesn’t always enable you to step-up through the chain of command easier. There are a lot of people who have degrees and are stuck in the same position that they started out with. I really don’t see how some people can’t reach the same position based on experience.
I’ve spoken to tons of career advisers myself who also tell me to do a degree, but I mean, are they incapable of believing that I can get a decent job without one? Not everyone needs a degree to get a nice house and possessions. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I want to be successful in my professional life, I wouldnt be content doing an every day office job I need a challenge in order to keep interested. But when I come home from my professional life i want to come home to a nice house, wife, kids etc. I dont think that means I lack ambition.
Anyway, the main plus point of having a degree on your cv is it shows employers you can motivate yourself to work, you can manage your own time, you can assimilate knowledge thats presented to you rather than shoved down your throats, you can motivate yourself, you're committed. Having a degree, imo shows a certain amount of independence. Its not for everyone and you can do fine without one, but in general you can do better with one. Im having fun at uni, in the first year fun came before uni. Second uni about equal. Third year work is going to have to come before fun. :( [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

i think now more than ever a uni degree is EXTREMELY important but i think that the courses of worth are vocational qualifications only. no point doing something arty farty as jobs in those areas by in large to me are 'right place right time' scenarios (music, philosophy, art, acting etc etc)
my advice - goto uni - if only for the life experience, the degree WILL be usefull. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

you may have good gcses, good a-levels and maybe a btec/gnvq/hnc/nvq but by in large a significant proportion of people do also. All that these qualifications say to an employer is 'im an intelligent person - i have BASIC skills in x,y,z field'.
A degree says 'i have a vast understanding of x,y,z field and i am also very intelligent'.
You will find when you have been working for a while that even jobs that you can work up the chain, but only to a certain extent as higher echelons of management promotions will be decided upon not just on the basis of performance but in addition to education. For instance - there was one scenario where a sales floor manager position opened and i and three other senior sales guys applied - the decision WAS made owing to the fact that one applicant had a degree, not industry related, but still a degree.the job went to him. later i found out that the position required a degree. Allowing us to apply was just window dressing.
if you wish to earn 30k plus and work for someone else (its alot easier to earn alot of money working for yourself) then the degree will be a requirement soon. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Live by the phrase "You live and learn, then you die and forget it all", education is ultimately pointless but moreover find something in life that you actually enjoy and do that if you can in some professional capacity. I realised doing my degree that I cannot spend the next 40 odd years of my life doing a 9-5 grind in an office job that I hate. I could get a job doing programming or something but I f***ing hate most stuff computing related now after my degree. When I sort out my final year project and the outstanding courseworks I have I am going off around the world travelling and I'm gonna have a f***ing good time of it.
Like someone else already said life is too short and you have to stop to appreciate it for a while. You don't have a lot of time when you're old to do that so make your time count now, before you get into a job for life. Personally I'm looking at the police (good pension scheme and you WILL need one when you retire), doing something within an airline company (cheap travel and holidays!) or perhaps starting my own property business. Luckily my parents have been wise and invested in property and know the ins and outs of it all so I have a basis to start from.
The only other thing I'd say is stop playing computer games and wasting your life. I've done enough of that now to last me a lifetime and only play very rarely when a good friend of mine is around. Don't get tied into this site and others and for anyone else thinking "Oh he said do what you enjoy and try and make a profession out of it" I don't mean trying to become a f***ing pro-gamer.
