Considering how full up the shoutbox is of uni talk, i thought I'd make this little column for people do discuss uni stuff!
I'm going to Nottingham Trent to do Economics, and I'll be honest I can't wait to get out of my house!
Anyways, what unis are you lot going to or are at already?

If you go into student village with seperate houses of 10 people, you might be really lucky or you might well end up with a total bunch of losers. It's basically being put in a 2nd year situation where you're in a house, without having had the first year to make friends and decide who you'll be living with.
Fair enough you've got lots of other houses in the student village, the bar etc, but from what I saw when I visited mates I had in the village there wasn't that much mixing, people mainly hung out with their housemates or people from their courses, and the place seemed very sedate and staid in comparison to the campus.
That's what I was like in the second year, living in a house in Uplands. In the first year it was just a big social scene in the campus halls, I could go out every night of the week on the p*** with different groups of people, non stop partying in the corridors, it was spectacular. Only drawback was that if you stayed in, the SU club with a massive PA system was about 50 yards away accross the block my window overlooked. It was rather loud until a good while after it had closed and the massive crowds of drunk people outside your window, shouting, trying to garner a last-minute shag, sliding down the steps on beer crates or singing DJ Otzi had dispersed.
To be fair though it was great fun to watch, would often have 5 or 6 people in my room from less fortunate sides of the building glued to the window.
Just for fun like, I let them go afterwards.
It is something to bear in mind though when you choose your halls of residence.
If you're an outgoing type who likes to meet and talk to a lot of people and have a large network of friends, or would be but was repressed by having been unpopular at school, then you definately want to choose a residence that holds a lot of people, and has lots of chance for socialisation - ie shared kitchens and bathrooms, and a decent tv room/ common area/ whatever.
It might sound like an advantage to have cooking facilities and a bathroom en suite, but given such things some people would never leave their rooms. The only reason we had such a good mix in the residence I was at was because of the shared kitchen which was the hub of the social scene.
But if you're more introspective and are the sort that tries to hide away from other people except perhaps for a few best mates, a student village type set up would be much more suited, as you have a stable, smaller group of people to live with. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Why did you decide to change from international relations though, which I'm guessing is a similar course, and why did you need to go back to get the politics A level? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Being catered also has its benefits cause everyone goes down to the canteen together, but I think cooking is a lot more social, and means your a lot more free, you dont have to be back at the hall by 5pm or whatever, you can just get a pizza from the kebab shop on the corner of the road whenever. As of today I've applied for Air Engineering Technician in the Navy, where I'll be paid to travel and enjoy a different side of life.
Middlesbrough and the towns around it are s***holes pretty much, cant wait to leave this place.
Good luck you lot off to uni anyway. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Maple bank is pretty good if you get in the new part. I think there are some parts still a bit s***ty.
Bar 1 on a friday = easiest night of pulling ever ;) It's about a minute walk from maple bank too. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

You could definately say a lot of positive things about the campus but it left me with a feeling of isolation, I mean being that far away from the city centre when you're out on the p***? When I was at Swansea it was a fair way but still only around 20 mins walk from campus to city centre, which was good fun anyway when p***ed with decent company and a couple of traffic cones.
I shouldn't mention the time though my memory and awareness hazed over for about 2 hours after taking a pill and when I 'came back around' I found myself dancing like a someone with parkinsons disease who's had a 22,000V line shoved up their arse, but with no shirt and no idea what had happened to my shirt, 10 minutes before the club closed. This was in December I should add, I had to go home with no shirt at all at 4am, I remember I had to run to keep warm even though I was that wasted.
Imagine if you were at Keele though - you'd have like 5 or 6 miles to cover through Stoke-on-Trent's most welcoming areas up some decent sized hills. If they had a decent, regular nightbus that ran after 4am then it would be a different matter, but I'd be very surprised if they did and I'd expect most Keele students evenings in Stoke are curtailed or avoided all together in favour of campus based events.
I've probably just written a complete load of bollocks but that's happy stoned UKT posting for you. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

As for the course, I'm doing International Relations again, I've just learnt in this past year that I can't be arsed explaining it to people so I just say Politics.
The Politics A-Level was something to fill my time as I didn't want to get a full time job, I did a few hours at school a week where the Dep. Head let me back in and worked behind a bar part time, now doing full time general slave work at an Actuarial place. Decent pay, go to Malia on Friday and then Uni when I get back, I can't actually wait. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

But the nice sandy beach right next to campus and gower etc were more than enough compensation for me, though the trouble with starting uni in the autumn is you've got to be there for 6 months before you can make use of the beach (well, unless you're p***ed at 4am), in the spring/summer though with all the barbecues, parties and sport that goes on down there it's brilliant, top lifestyle.
