Harriman Interview
Stuart Harriman is a player that should need no introduction. So here it is.
In 2002 Stu was a member of the Uninspired line-up which handed 4K their first LAN defeat in 6 months. A few weeks later he was recruited to replace long-serving 4K member Oppie in the UK-based team. For the next couple of years he competed at the highest echelons of gaming across many countries. Brazil, Spain, China, South-Korea, USA. At times he was paid a salary and at times not. A few weeks ago Stu Harriman announced he was going inactive from 4K and was replaced by Ola "Element" Moum.
You've spent the last 4 years of your life gaming, if you had to name a highpoint and low point, what would they be?
Stu Harriman - The high point would have to be going to San Francisco with my brother for what was basically a holiday, or possible the day I got back from WEG, too close to call really. The low point would have to be during WEG season 1, too much time to kill and not enough to do!
Are you inactive from 4K for good? HAve you any plans to return to the team?
Stu Harriman - Yes I'm inactive, I'm really not sure whats happening now, and I have no idea if i'll be returning to the team or not, none of that is up to me.
If another side, say an American, Swedish or international team made anapproach for you, would you be interested? Have you currently had any offersfrom other CS teams?
Stu Harriman - No I haven't really spoken to anyone, and haven't had any offers from anyone either. I wouldn't join any international teams as I have work, learn'd'ing, friends and girlfriend commitments all here.
What are your plans for the future?
Stu Harriman - About to start a short CAD course, then starting to do contract work off and on, at some point. More immediatly is, recieve WEG money, go on holiday, pass my driving test.
Element replaced you in 4K, do you think that is a permanent change and how will it alter both the teams performance and team spirit?
Stu Harriman - I really don't know, hes a really good player, probably a lot better than me, and has played and won in all kinds of competitions so im sure it can only be a good change. Also hes always seemed really nice so I think it was a good choice all round.
You were an active member of 4K from February 02 to May 05, how much of that time were you contracted to the team and did you have enough money to live off? Are the present players contracted to the team?
Stu Harriman - I don't think I ever signed an actual contract for 4K, although for almost a year I was paid a full salary and although it was nothing substancial enough to buy a house, buy a car, feed the kids. It was enough to get by with the odd days work thrown in. I'm not sure if everyone is currently contracted I think they might be but dont hold me to that.
Stu Harriman - Not play cs.
It is rumoured that there were frequent conflicts between the players and the management of 4k (zommy/protex) could you go into more details on this and your thoughts on their actions?
Stu Harriman - Well, there were a few differences of opinion, not so much with Tobe, apart from his inability to pick up a phone at times, hes always been more than helpful and got things sorted when they were needed. Protex i'm not really sure about, he seems to take it all a touch more seriously than a load of kids playing computer games needs to be, but each to their own i guess.
When was the last time you properly practiced CS, as in, played on public servers and took part in pcws/mix games outside of bootcamps/tournaments?
Stu Harriman - Well I play from time to time but not really on my own pc, so I dont count it as practise. So i'd have to say, during the time in Stockholm and then in Korea for WEG. But I play just as much know as I always have when at home, which admitedly is very little.
Since you began playing for 4K you've witnessed some 20 players pass through the team, which line-up did you feel you had the most fun with and which players do you most miss?
Stu Harriman - Well, I guess when it was the long-standing 4K lineup when i first joined, and they were named "Infinity-eSports", with Doug, Marc, Danfrag, Greg and PB. Not that anythings wrong with the new players, just not quite as attached just yet.
Roughly how much money have you made from gaming?
Stu Harriman - I really have no idea, but I have a big overdraft to pay off, so clearly not enough.
As a member of 4K you had the fortune to compete in events in roughly 10 countries over 4 continents, what location did you find most memorable and why?
Stu Harriman - Umm probably... during our bootcamp in Brazil, when we stayed in Florianapolis with Adrena.intel. The whole place was pretty much amazing, including the accomodation which makes a change.
You've moved house several times since you began gaming and for a while you were living with the 4K players in Swansea, who still lives where and why did Swansea not work out?
Stu Harriman - I think just TObe does now, we all moved their for 6 months to practice for a string of events. It as just a bit small for 5 of us, and I guess we started getting on each others nerves a little bit, but what do you expect.
The CS division of 4K have constantly been accused of sucking up the team's money without being able to produce the tournament results or decent interviews for the media, what would your response be to this?
Stu Harriman - Pretty true
When you played in tournaments, did you feel you were representing the UK or representing yourselves?
Stu Harriman - I never really thought about it like that, i was always representing the big cheque they give you when you win, sadly I never got to have one of those, but I guess it was more for myself than for the UK, selfish as always.
If you were the manager/owner of 4K, what would you do differently?
Stu Harriman - Take all the sponsor money and run away to Australia
To what extent have you isolated yourself socially due to your gaming commitments, friends/family/relationships etc?
Stu Harriman - Quite a lot, take this interviw for instance, yes i kind of rushed it even though you sent it me weeks ago, but thats not excuse for the clear lack of correct punctuation, awful spelling (to say the least), and just basic lack of intellect. So yeah as with all sports "yada yada" you have to make sarcifices, but nothing too major luckily for me.
Shoutouts?
Stu Harriman - hello nat, nyg get a 3v3
