NiP Hires New Manager

Posted by Fluke at 20:18 13/3/2002.

As seen on GeekBoys:
"NiP has decided to take in a new manager, the reason for this being the fact that NiP is organizing itself into becoming a professional organization.

The new manager's name is David Garpenståhl, irc name G3X-. He has a background in the music industry, which in many ways mirrors the gaming scene, where you have agents and managers who help out the artist with organization, contracts, sponsorshipdeals etc.

He will help NiP in setting up a company structure around the brand name and furthermore help out in making Nip into a "sporting" club."

Geekboys also mention that they'll have an interview with David up soon, so keep an eye out.

good stuff, if throwing big black balls down a piece of green grass for hours on end, and throwing rocks down a stretch of ice to see who can get closest to a given point/object, and other totally boring sports are allowed to be classified as a 'sport' i cant see the problem with computer games becoming a sport? How many bowls players do you see forming companys? What can possibly lead you to believe that being good at a single PC computer game is grounds to form a company on. These people are either extremely arrogant or extremely stupid. Nobody ever heard of any of NiP before counter-strike and for them to expect their dominance to carry on to the next big game which is likely to be Doom 3 or Quake 4 which will be as close to the oposite of counter-strike that you can get in the same genre is unrealistic. Nobody can continue playing a computer game all day long and expect to live of it, PC computer games aren't popular mainstream and doubfully ever will be, they aren't a new product that is eventually going to explode when people realise its there, pc games have been around a long time. The difference between the "unpopular" sports you like to compare 'gaming' to are that you regularly see Bowls and snooker on afternoon and primetime TV, how many computer game related programs do you see on your TV? I know of one and that is on in the early hours of the morning when there is nobody awake to watch it.

Pro gaming is a dream that will never materialise that exists inside the heads of all those little l33t kids people used to despise back when people played online games purely for fun and suported by the little 13-16 year old kids. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

For NiP its not a dream, people buy their merchandies, they're making thousands, and with each tournament the prize for 1st gets bigger, and the mroe they win. Why not set it up as a company and increase the money they make while they're playing counter-strike? They're good at a game, they're making the most they can of it, nothing wrong with that. Spot on. They did it for nothing, happily.

Why wouldn't they want to do it for money, if they think they can. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

moofy doesn't talk s***e. This is an obviously biased discussion considering this is a site read by many a wannabe pro-gamer geek. I love sticking my oar in an argument. :D. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Computer games are defo getting way way more popular

Kids are spending on averege 10 hours a week playing comp games.

Competitions are going to become bigger and more popular with bigger sponser getting involved

saying that comp games aint mainstream is funny seen as they are already more popular than moives and growing a much greater pace [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The only way to make good money as a Pro-gamer at the moment is to play a single player game (so you don't have to share the prize money with the rest of your team) and to be the BEST in the world. *i.e. You win 80% of the comps you enter. If anyone thinks that pro-gaming will become BIG TV type entertainment in the next 5 years then they are kidding themselves.

I like "playing" games and have done for about 20 years but watching another clan war is a bit dull really, no matter how many views you can have, and in reality people like me are the core audience. If they can't keep me hooked then there is problem 1.

How many people here actually finish watching the demos they download? I rarely do...and why do you stop watching them? because you would rather be surfing/playing/chatting in irc? ...not a good sign!

Just because a clan can sell a few Tshirts doesnt mean jack-sh*t. You can buy a crap Tshirt from most student bars or rock pubs in the UK.

People would be better off spending 8 hours a day teaching themselves something useful that they could base a career off.

Just my opinion.. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Did see some TV, although not being able to understand the language was kinda a turn off. Saw some kinda of weird talent show, some anime, maybe a soap opera but its hard to tell since i couldnt understand, and then the Starcraft channel. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Yes, the Koreans are Starcraft mad...but that's the exception - not the rule.

The only way pro-gaming will generate any serious revenue is if it's televised, therefore advertised and sponsored...but someone (read: A big TV operator) has to believe in such a venture and I doubt many do.

In all honesty would you watch "Gamers TV" if such a channel existed and how much would you watch it?

Another problem with watching computer games is that you have to have at least some understanding of them.

If you went up to any man in the street and said "here watch this half-hour coverage of NIP vs X3" (or a <insert game here> deathmatch etc) I could guarantee he would be bored within 5 minutes...and therefore change channel and miss that all important advertising slot.

I would be surprised if....in 2 years time, there were more than 10 people that had earned more than $100,000 in that year from playing games (that's dollars by the way).

It's all a pipe dream....

Spend that 8 hours a day learning a language (spoken or programming), biology, chemistry. Then go and earn >$100,000 every year of your life and guess what, there's a high chance that you could be doing a job that you find more enjoyable than playing games. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
