Steam Interview

Some real news has arisen, you'll be glad to hear. HomeLan Fed have interviewed Gabe Newell in regard to Valve's up and coming content delivery system, Steam.
HomeLAN - Do you foresee a time where the majority of game developers will publish and distribute game titles via broadband via Steam or a similar service and totally bypass the brick and morter store or standard mail order service?

Gabe Newell - Yes. That's why we decided to spend the time and money to do this. It seems inevitable, and it seems to be really good for developers and customers of games. Unfortunately lots of companies that ought to be investing in broadband have too much channel conflict to allow them to provide much leadership in this space.
The rest of the interview awaits you here.

Sounds like a load of bs so they can limit our activities. Combining services that don't need combining - ftp servers, instant messaging. Use it for testing servers by all means, but as a delivery platform for final products it's awkward and geared against really owning software. More like we'll buy the right to download a game in the future. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
