World Cyber Games Update

Posted by Rob at 12:52 5/9/2002.

Over at ES Reality they've collected some new information in regard to the World Cyber Games 2002 Finals. Two items are of interest to the CS Community. Firstly, teams will battle it out in a continent to continent method, as opposed to nation to nation (ala FIFA, Q3 and Age of Empires). Secondly, the prizes are the following:
CS:
1st - $40,000, 2nd - $20,000, 3rd - $10,000, 4th - $5,000, 5th - $3,000, 6th- $3,000, 7th - $2,000, 8th - $2,000
A pretty impressive package. If you wish to find out more about the World Cyber Games then you should visit the official website. You can also view the schedule for the finals here.

Just so people don't get the wrong idea. There is the normal big tournament, for each country that sends a team. The prize money is for that competition.

The nation vs nation, and continent vs continent is more of a fun competition the day before finals day. Last year they didnt do it in cs, but in q3 it was 2v2, and also in fifa it was 2v2. So i guess it's just a case of getting 5 players from each continient to play, the unfair thing in this : unless they dont have unlimited continent teams, not every1 has the chance to play in it, unlike in the other games. Well that just owns CPL. Has anyone seen the promotion video for the WCG 2002? Its pretty amazing, they have put a lot of time and effort into this to promote the WCG and gaming etc.

Hope it pays of :> [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

To be fair to WCG last year was their first major event (to my knowledge) so there is obviously a learning curve. Hopefuly they have learned from the mistakes they made and looked at other tournaments like CPL and Lan Arena etc to improve their own.

From a personal point of view I hope that the pre qualifiers are up to a high standard and pass off without any problems. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I expect the prequalifiers to be of a superb standard, as they are to be run by the same people that ran the cpl qualifier.

The only problem in WCG is they refused to accept that they had made the mistake, and that instead they said that it was the teams that had decided to edit their configs and give themselves far lower rates.....

The other tournaments ran fine, except the controversy in the fifa final, but it was just the cs admins that seemed to be lacking a clue. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
