Half-Life 2 Pay To Play Rumours Answered

Posted by Dev at 01:13 4/9/2003.

PHL posted Gabe Newells reply to an e-mail sent to him about the 'pay to play rumours'. The e-mail has since been confirmed as legit. Here are the e-mails in full:

Original E-Mail: As I'm sure you are aware the HL2 community is going crazy with the rumour that HL2 is going to be like a MMORPG and you will have to pay a fee each month via Steam to play HL2 multiplayer.
I don't believe this to be true but can you please put it to rest once and for all. PLEEEEEEASE.

Gabe Newell: Here's my current thinking: Some people want to buy Half-Life 2 in a store. Right now we have three SKUs planned at three price points. One will have single-player only and not play MODs and we think of that as the mass market SKU (sold mainly at the Costcos and Walmarts of the world). The second is our traditional single-player plus multiplayer SKU that runs MODs and is sold at places like EBX. The third is the collector's edition SKU with lots of cool bonus stuff for people who like cool bonus stuff.

In the Steam world, some people will want to buy it once, like the middle SKU above. Other people will want to buy the game on subscription (e.g. $9.95/month). The good news for the "buy it once" crowd is, well, they only have to pay once. The bad news is that when we come out with new content (expansion products, TF 2, and presumably other games) then they have to pay separately for those. We're pretty sure that the $9.95 guys are going to get the better value, as we've been pretty good over the years at generating a lot of content.

Now nobody has done this before, so we're scratching our heads and massaging the plans to make sure we've got the best set of options. We've had some feedback that we should sell the top SKU (single-player only no MODs) on Steam, and my reaction has been "yeah, right, for the three people in the world who have a broadband connection, are sophisticated enough to purchase software over the Internet, but DON'T want to play MODs and multiplayer". Some people have said "I want a subscription, but I think the box and the manual are cool, so what about sending me those" and I think that's pretty interesting and we're trying to figure out what to do for them (needless to say Sierra isn't exactly jumping for joy at the idea of selling us boxes so people don't buy Half-Life 2 in stores).

But nowhere has there been a suggestion that people pay in the store and then pay a monthly fee on top of that a la the MMORPG.

There was then a follow up reply in a forum thread from Gabe which reads like this:

The various SKUs will be available at the other stores. It's just how we think of them (we think of the lowest price one as the "Walmart" SKU even though Walmart will probably be the biggest single seller of all three SKUs given their volume).

TF2 isn't a MOD, correct. However the subscription will be for anything we make. So when TF2 ships, the subscribers get it as part of their subscription.

We've been talking with retailers about the retail SKUs for a long time. Steam pricing was what I was trying to explain. Steam options seemed to require an explanation of the retail SKUs.

For those that don't work in retail or don't know what a SKU is, SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit and is a number associated with a product for inventory purposes. Each product must have a SKU, and each SKU must be unique.

That sux, cant they just release HL2 like HL, and the mods/addons come seperately for download of retail purchase? :| [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

seems like a mess to me... can't they just keep it like things have gone before? hell of a lot simpler.. in the end we simply jus end up payin a hell of a lot more, and have to go thru a lot of hassle. i mean, $9.95 a month... 5 months later, you're equal with those who paid in full. if hl2 is going to last anywhere near as long as the original, then you'd be insane to go as subscription :/ [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

you'd want the 2nd SKU Wicked^ if i'm reading correctly. No idea how much q:P

edit: With the 2nd SKU you get HL2 and it's MODS but you don't get updated content and will have to pay as and when you want that content. They are basically 'forcing' people into subscribing monthly to get a similar package as to what we have now with HL1.

SKU 2 is probably the one i'll go for and just pay for tf2 and other 'big' updates when I cba and have cash. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

price will be that of a usual game I would of thought but you'll end up paying more than that for extra content through steam if you want to keep up to date. You will subscribe or update when you want to periodically UNLESS you just want HL2 single player and that is all then you just buy the game with no extra costs at a later date. break it down and it aint THAT complicated

You can either buy:

1. SP only,

2. MP + SP (Normal),

3. SP + MP + Bonus s***,

The mid range SKU is basically same as what every1 buys atm, as id expect any subsequently released patches would be free and not part of bonus package. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

01:34 4/9/2003
no they aren't free decrepit. SKU 2 is nearest to what most of us have now (bought HL1 and then dl mods and patches). But you get HL2 and the mods but the updates such as TF2 content and such aren't free! They will cost you again so you can either pay for content when you want it or subscribe and get it the day its released and have it ALL. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

the Multiplayer side of HL2 is a suprise. No valve employee will speak about it. So im guessing it aint gonna be just the normal Deathmatch. And about wich package to buy, package 2 seems to be the best, all patches will be free of course, you then just pay for the official Valve Mods.. TF2 etc. Seems like a good deal to me. I think its a bit much, to have to pay for MP through steam. By the way, how would it work, if its CC only, then there are probably going to be quite a few stolen credit cards by little brats who want to '0wn up t3h h4lf l1f3 sc3n3'.
Or would it be a posted cheque? apart from that, i understand, but I doubt it will do anyone any favours. He said that no one had tried it before, and thats probably because its a silly idea:) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

ffs I pre-ordered HL2 ages ago off amazon, but I bet it's gonna be SKU1. They really should have released this information ealier, it's gonna cause all sorts of confusion for retailers/consumers.

This all sounds very costly,
SKU1 single player only, lets face it whos gonna buy this.
SKU2 gonna cost more but will support mods, some of which are free but things like TF2 and CS are gonna cost us.
Then the subscripion. Who in their right mind is gonna fork out $120/year.

it all depends on how the economy in your country runs and how much computer games cost..
if your paying $50 a pop for a computergame in america perhaps the subscription isnt such a bad idea

im sure they have something up their sleve to make the subscription worth having. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

most of those kind of mods were free anyway, as they were developed by 3rd parties. It will be the same in HL2. The only thing you'll be paying $9.99 a month for is for the ones you mentioned above and the single player games like Blue Shift, Gunman Chronicles and Opposing Forces. Of course though there will be newer brighter concepts by then made by 3rd parties, which will be completely free, like CS was when it was first conceived. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
