We warned that the appointment of a new CPL league comissioner could lead to changes in the way we play the game and it certainly has. Not the small insignificant changes such as lowering the time for the c4 or adjusting the tournament format, nope the CPL has decided to change the way CS is played completely.
The league's new commissioner, Justin Blanchard, announced today the following game format changes to this winter's $100,000 Counter-Strike tournament sponsored by Hitachi Global Storage Technology.Regular Matches
Overtime Matches
- Increase of max rounds from 12 to 15
- Decrease round time from 2:30 to 1:45
- Increase freeze time between rounds from 10 seconds to 15 seconds
Justin Blanchard believes that these changes will move the game play to a structure similar to NFL football. Rounds with a lot of action followed by a regrouping strategy period, then another play with lots of action. Overtime changes should provide teams an opportunity to utilize their full gamut of strategy instead of just one round determining play for the remainder of overtime.
- Increase start money from $800 to $10,000
- Increase freeze time from 15 seconds to 20 seconds
Justin also released a preliminary version of the Counter-Strike tournament rules, now located at www.thecpl.com/winter/cs_rules.htm
This is will be, without doubt, the biggest change in CS gameplay in quite some time. If past trends persist then all other tournament organisers will adopt similiar rules. A much needed ahd worthwhile change? Or an over-zealous CPL comissioner looking to stamp his authority upon the community, to be discussed.

It looks like Justin just read the gotfrag article and made the changes without thinking
imo, the extra 5 seconds isn't needed and the round time should be 2 not 1:45
reason being that the extra time will help in clutch conditions, you don't want the last guy to run in the room with 4 ppl in so they can shred him cos of the time, you want him to kill them all - the extra 15 secs will give him a bit more time to say get the bomb down or come up the ladder from behind on nuke

The money system was changed (rightly) because of shags article (didnt see him whining when zex used it to their advantage at eswc, only when NoA were beaten later at the cpl) and now Midway writes an article that sugggests CS become more like American Football (!!!!) and lo and behold, the new guy in CPL goes for it.
This is just dumbing down CS further imo. If 1v1 fast paced action is really what people wanted, why isnt quake/ut the most popular 'eSport'?
Remember SK Vs rival where fisker (i think) won a 1v4 at cpl? Better remember it, cos you wont be seeing it again. Would he have time to do that with the new times? Mill is a small map, the problem is excaberated on larger maps. If a team sets up a slow strat and it goes pear shaped, there isnt much time to regroup with this time.
Some people like the slow gameplay of CS. The game should be about whats fun to play - not whats fun to watch. If we head down this road, we will end up with an americanised game. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

However, I like the changes and think that they are all positive. I also agree with Clint that CO is a far improved scoring method.
You don't see people running around timing out a round in CO seeing as soon as the bomb is planted the timer stops. That was the ONLY problem with CO rules.
CO isn't a mad perma-rush either, teams soon learnt that didn't work against coordinated defences and they would do as we do now, a variety of slow pushes.
1min 45s is enough time to get a bomb down and do some picking off. It places a greater pressure on the Ts to do that rather than sit there. An extra 15 seconds wouldn't change that at all, the bomb can be planted at 1s as it is.
CS should always fill the gap between the speed of q3 and the speed of s*** games, these changes bring it back to that a bit [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

It is a bit weird though, as making the round time shorter requires teams to have more pre-defined "plays" rather than just "push in three directions at once and see what happens". This further extends the advantage of those teams with real organisation and preparation over those relying on individual "skill", which is the opposite of what most people wanted when they said they wanted the game to be faster.
