iGUK today announced that they will be hosting the Acon 5 UK Qualifiers. Not heard of Acon 5? Well here is the jist of it.
Last year a competition was held in Shanghai China called Acon 4, there were many qualifiers around the world to find the best Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne players with the winners earning the opportunity to represent their country (and an all expenses paid trip) to the finals.
This year Acon has expanded its horizons by introducing Counter-Strike 1.6 as a tournament game. Naturally iGUK and the team behind the European Online Gaming Championships were selected to be the UK partner for such endeavours. The UK finals of the competition will be held at the GameOn LAN Party in Burton-upon-trent on Saturday 23rd April. All teams wishing to earn a spot in the final will have to qualify either the day before, same location, or at one of the 4 iGUK qualifiers.
The qualifiers are being held at GameTheWorld - Bangor (1st April), CyberGamesZone - Newcastle (2nd April), GlobalGaming Arena - Birmingham (2nd April) and Harrow Arena - Harrow (3rd April). The cost of entry for the 4 iGUK qualifiers is £15 per player, and only £10 the day before at GameOn. All qualified teams receive free entry into the finals. There are 8 qualification slots available, 2 for CGZ, 2 for GGA, 2 for Harrow, 1 for GTW and 1 on the 22nd at GameOn.
The Winning CS Team and WC3 Player will be paid to travel to Shanghai for the World Finals in June. All travel (from UK Airport) to Shanghai, plus accomodation and food and drink for the week in Shanghai is totally covered by their sponsors. Plus an extra £5,000 of product prizes for the ACON 5 UK Tournament, including ABIT Motherboards, ATI Graphic Cards is up for grabs and other sponsored prizes yet to be confirmed. This is shared between the the 2nd-8th places for the CS and the WC3 competitions.
Teams can now register for the competition, but it is advised they the rules first. Please note, this competition is open to UK players only, those of us with UK citizenship. Also note, there are no direct invites to the UK finals.
