Is It The Way Forward?

Posted by Myers at 08:55 14/9/2004.

Whilst doing my morning browse, I browsed across an interesting read over on the similarly excellent Amped News site. The article Is it the way forward was written by adomm and is a handy way of passing 10 minutes at work. Have a snippet:

Realistically, having a major set of sponsors usually creates the image that your team is one of high caliber; and thus normally is respected greatly by gamers, the media and spectators alike. By this I mean people will tend to understand that having financial backing from large (often national and international) corporations, often highlights that the team has worked hard enough to impress those willing to invest in them. Being able to obtain the respect you deserve, ultimately means that in the future, corporate links and relations can be made with others in the competitive arena to your advantage - highlighting the popular business phrase... Its not what you know, but who you know!

However being sponsored and under ' the eye ' of all in the gaming scene, also creates an atmosphere of great expectation. Teams, in this situation, are under a large amount of pressure to keep their gaming performance at a high and profitable standard - and understandably so. If standards start to slip and landslide, the people who they previously gained the respect of, will soon turn to another direction and another team. This situation also allows critics to question the team's worthiness of having such sponsorship - as they will be likely to be compared to new teams who do not have such a luxury.

Unfortunately adomm has a penchant for constantly stating the obvious ("Teams who have the financial backing of a sponsor are more likely to have the ability to attend worldwide competitions and events"), but please do not let that put you off.

I think it's a pretty good article, as you say Myers, he does tend to state the obvious. There isn't really anything there for seasoned sponsorship seekers or anyone with a good interest in business side of e-sports, even with a few minutes of contemplation on the advantages of sponsorship, one could arrive at similar conclusions to those presented in that article.

It's kind of a layman's overview of sponsorship and its benefits. But a good read none the less. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

yer teams earn the respect from big companies etc etc, therefore willing to get sponsored. but what about majority of girl clans who come on the scene a day and have big names following them....half of them i've seen do nothing in the slightest impressive. is it a sheer ploy from the companies cos they'll get noticed as sponsoring a girl clan for the attention in which they recieve? groan. but thats an endless argument.

I always like these kind of articles. I like the way people think that CS/gaming will one day become a full time job where people get paid to play.

IMO these people need to come bak from cukoo land and be realistic. Gaming will never be a pro "sport". Lets live with it and get on with life.

PS this isnt a diss at people who play CS, im not bragging about having a real life! i dont ! :D [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
