UK LAN Gaming Championships (Butlins)

Posted by Myers at 21:35 20/5/2005.

The creative folks over at Arena HQ have announced their intention to host a 3-day UK-LGC (UK LAN Gaming Championships) event at Butlins from the 6th January 2006.

The event, assisted by the good folk at Electronic Sports LTD, aims to seat 1000 gamers and will cost £140 per gamer. This cost though does include accomodation, entry to all the resort's attractions and entry to all the competitions.

Full gaming line up is yet to be decided but will definitely feature a professional 32 clan Counterstrike event with a very large cash prize as well as several Amateur Clan and Deathmatch competitions.

Although details are still a little, shall we say, hazy, we should be providing over 250 dedicated gaming machines for the main pro and amateur competitions in Centre Stage, a venue that is the size of 2 football pitches!! We will also be holding a BYOC (bring your own computer) section in the slightly smaller 'Reds' venue.

All resort facilities including bars, restaurants, nightclubs, Waterworld theme park, amusements etc will be at our full disposal as the resort will only be accepting competitors and spectators for the duration of the event.

Bookings and ticket allocation are being handled directly by the Butlins booking centre and will be available from 1st July. Will this be the greatest event the UK has ever seen? Or a diabolical tragedy?, UK-LGC seems destined for one fate or the other.

I might be wrong, but i *think* that the winter peak season ends on that week, when all the kiddies go back to school. Still £140 does seem a decent deal for butlins. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

sounds great, I just hope the UK scene hasnt died by then!

Gamers and teams need to start embracing the fact that events will cost more, and particularly that if you take your gaming seriously and want to win tournaments, you should think about investing in accomodation. Sleeping on the floor is hardly appropriate preparation! :) [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

price may be ok in theory but i think you will struggle to find 2/3 teams in the UK who have 5 player all able to stump up £140 quid let alone 32 :o

this kind of plan does more to hurt the UK lan scene than help it ...... its obviously not going to work its not a workable plan yet they will go ahead anyway t hen blame the gamers and lack of interest when they are forced to cancel it [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

lol exactly £140 + Travel for a radom lan :E~ I doubt many people or sponsors will pay out that much for one event there u have the posibility of loosing a total of £700+ & Travel for 5members... and I doubt for such an expensive lan you are gunna get decent european teams as it will cost even more for them. I think that does kinda take the micky that they wana get that much money outta ppl :< Don't see it working in my eyes but it would be a nice thing to see what happens and what teams attend. some of the comments here are pathetic. First of all, for a first time thing i doubt there is going to be much profit in it at all.... renting a resort that holds 4500 at peak must be kinda pricey im guessing...

2nd of all.... dont make me laugh... european teams will be cueing up to compete in this if the prize money is high as its been rumoured. £140 a player INCLUDING accomm... whats the cpl? 100 dolla per playa + 100 dolla a night room??? £140 inc accomm onsite EVERYTHING, fully licensed facilities etc is a bargain no? I dont think anyone realises how big the prizes are going to be. And the organisers are aiming to get all the top teams in attendance. I know much more than what has been released and believe me, its going to be the biggest yet. On another note, the 1000+ players is just for tournement play they have another room that can hold 600+ byoc players. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Dont be retarded - its not against the rules, so all those jumping on the bandwagon should learn to read.

Its not even open to interpretation because 4K match those categories. 1stly they are based in the UK (as a registered LTD company), it seems then if that is not matched then the team has to fulfil those formulations of players

4K's is 2-2-1 which is not all that different from 2-1-1-1 really. Anyway I am sure that 4K could draft in a UK player if the rules were bent to stop 4K from entering (since they meet it with cat 1).

i think snk, what's i'm kind of worried about, is the experience of the organisers. Most people started relatively small. Multiplay/GameFrontier/iGUK/CPL etc, and then gradually built up to hosting the events today. ArenaHQ appear to have announced the event rather prematurely before all the details have been finalised and before they can announce their sponsors. There are a lot of comparisons with what they're trying to do and what CXG tried to do in 04. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

That's a very steep entrance fee, it makes you wonder if they know their market? Primarily students. The dates they have set? Shortly after Christmas.

The prizes available matter little as everyone knows only the top few teams will be getting any - you're basically asking 950+ chumps to sign up to allow a few people to win money. I don't see it being held at Butlins as being a major selling point, most gamers would rather it held in a big hall at half that price, even if it did mean no accommodation - as i-series attendence figures can vouch for. At half the price they'd have 70 quid extra to spend at their time during lan, which is plenty if they wanna go out on the p*** a couple of night's runnings.

Will be interesting to see if it works, I don't have much faith in it due to the cost and timing. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Another one to attempt to magic 1000+ players from thin air and thinks organising small LANs is any real preparation for holding events on this sort of scale.

Best of luck to them. Competition is good and the more LANs the better. However, I strongly suspect this will go the way of every other "huge lan from nowhere" attempt that we've seen all-too-often over the years, i.e. fall flat on it's face. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
