Letting Off Steam

Posted by arsen at 00:31 25/1/2003.

Another article concerning the infamous Steam 2.0 has been posted on CS-Nation. The rant, entitled 'Letting Off Steam', is Luftwaffles' reply to the recent article posted on HL.org.
The community, in their blind idiocy, decides that since everyone seems to have this beta version, it is the official version. Way too many people judge what Steam will be based on a version of it that they aren't even supposed to have. A petition is even online to have CS 1.6 released as a regular patch like it used to be. Of course, this would defeat the whole idea of "progress" but, surely it must be better than Steam! Right...
It's controversial and makes for an interesting read. Click here to take a look.

Downloads 100 megs of crap every time you connect?

Maybe thats why I never managed to get a game with less than 200 ping, even on 4u-servers' 1.6 server.

What I find hard to believe though is, it was delayed and delayed, and they finally announced it would be out on that thursday, and lo and behold, it is.

But then when the whole thing c**ks out, they claim it wasn't meant to be released then after all, and it's not their fault!

It's nearly 2 weeks since then, if it wouldn't have been out by now anyway, I doubt they could have been that innacurate with the release date, it had already been delayed like 10 times, and they said "it's going to be thursday" just 2 days before. There's quite a difference between 2 days and 2 weeks (or however long it will be before the final version is released).

I think they're just trying to cover their arses, personally. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

A leaked release a couple of hours before official release, and they try to blame that and it being in beta for all the problems? ;-)

I'm sure in those 2 hours they'd have multiplied their bandwidth several times over to allow everyone to connect flawlessly [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

It would of been far better for them to release CS 1.6 and Steam on April 1st. That way at least everyone expects it to be a joke.

I suggest some of you take up crack or heroin in the meantime to cope with the waiting period. I have some 20's and 40's here if any of you need it!

Do you an 1/8 of brown for free coz I'm a pusher, rather like Valve.

Lmfao what a joke! :D [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

We can judge the concept and what a 2 hour early release has done. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

dear god excuse the tripe that i posted up above! i was not sound in the mind then.

I totally disagree with this new patching system. You always get some t**t saying "ohh i can do this better, but it will be s*** starting off (and through out the usage of it)".

Its far easier to just release the fcuking patch to BY, BW and the likes. Its a simple sharing topology that works better for everyone.

DOWN WITH THE SYSTEM!

Steam is a good idea, and will eventually work really well. You can't judge it fairly on the beta. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Having to connect to a central network to then go and play elsewhere will never be a good idea for fps. The introduction of changes we don't need such as the friends system don't justify it. If they want a system to deliver patches, they should just give us a program that connects to a server with a list of addresses to download the latest patch. Not one we have to run to play a game [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Loads of programs connect to a server to see if there are any updates when they're loaded. You don't notice it, and won't for CS unless there are actually updates to get. Automating updates is a good thing, and should hopefully mean more frequent updates to the software. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Tbh Steam is a good idea, and an idea that many other games companies havent thought of, and it could change the way we play games. But what I don't like is that I have to be online to play it, yes I habe broadband but I don't like the idea of like say being at a LAN tournament and the game being delayed cos of a few hickups! with Steam.

Nuff said really, Vavle should give you the option to use Steam or not and to take imput from the community rather than bringing out s*** that no1 really apreciates and forcing you to play something they like. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]
