HL2 Pre-loading

Posted by NoToRiOuS at 11:00 27/8/2004.

Jess Cliffe from Valve sends word that Half-Life 2 pre-loading has begun. There is no purchase required for HL2 to pre-load its encrypted files. However you will need to purchase the game to activate it. Those of you that are planning to play HL2 on the day it's released then start pre-loading.

To do this click the "play games" button and right click "Half-Life 2", then select "Start pre-loading".

*Update*  Just on a little side note, the compressed files you will be downloading at this stage is around 500mb. So it might be best to do it while you sleep.

well yes they will be encrypted, like CS:CZ gcf's were. But i doubt the files are anything important, its probably just texture files and images, etc. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I "imagine" it will be same price on play.com as it is on steam.

If I format I'll have to download it again.

Makes sense to me just to have it on a couple of cd's or on dvd's [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

oldlady makes a good point about having the cd's but with cs:s you'll have a million updates if u install it anyway :/

Personally i prefer to have the game on cd as if feel this is the only sure fire way of me not losing me but BUT im so impatient ill probably just preload it so i can play it asap then my pc will crash ill lose all my details and will have to rebuy the game. roffle. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

yeah, let's go buy it in a shop, because it's quicker an costs £10 more than online.

Buy online, not from valve though - look at the incongruence between the CZ prices from valve and play. Someone somewhere will be selling it online for £20 delivered. [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

The prices will probably be around the same for buying on Steam or in stores. If I remember correctly, Steam allowed you to preorder Condition Zero before its release, and it had £10 off the standard shop price.

But you also have to take into account that should you buy on Steam, you don't get the manual/box etc. Whether you like the feel of a cardboard box, jewel case and 20 page manual is up to you. I'm just wary of the future possibility of a massive Steam database crash, which could result in details of player's accounts being lost, including what games they had purchased under Steam.
