Traditional Steam Installer on the way

Posted by alpha at 00:23 13/9/2003.

According to Redphive, after the poor performance from the Steam network today VALVe are now working on a traditional installer for the updates Steam would normally download. This file will be a large download but it is likely to mirrored like a normal HL patch so should be much easier to get hold of.

I have yet to see confirmation of this from any other source but it seems likely, as it's the only way VALVe will be able to most of the whole userbase in a few days.

Lets see a single person who has cussed it on this board make a program even a millionth as good as Steam.

Like i said, its a good program, pricks like you lot just haven't given it a chance.

The servers are completely overloaded. If you had a super fast car with 100,000 fat b******s in the boot it aint gonna go very quickly now is it, no, but if you deal with each fat b****** in turn, like Steam will do once all the updating has been finished etc, it'll be faster than the WON system and much more efficient.

So shut you traps and live with it.

they were going to do this anyway as was already released in a statement before, was just a matter of time, the fact that the servers are getting hit by 100,000 people constantly trying to update doesnt make steam look all that well, but it works fine i installed it in about 10 mins this morning when it was first released, be patient kids give steam a chance! People are saying it's just because of the servers are overloaded etc and the number of people trying to run it.

Well surely Valve knew what would happen, so why didn't they design a piece of software that would be able to cope with these easily predicted circumstances.
Before whenever there was an update for CS/HL there was no problem. The system worked well, lots of sites mirrored the files, people had easy access to them and the installers didn't crash.

at the end of the day if valve thought steam was flawless and perfect they wouldnt have released it for their competitors to look at unless there was money being made ie ...HL2 release.... fact is that there is absolutly no was to test a program like steam except for releasing a very popular file with it and then fixing the things that go wrong [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Thing is geo, steam may be something of a good idea in THEORY, but in practice it is cumbersome and intrusive. No program should ever auto-add itself to load with windows, especially not one used for a game.

The amount of times they have it sending and requesting data from the overloaded servers is far too often - even when everyone has it donwloaded the servers are gonna be pretty much full all the time because of how badly designed and implemented the system is.

It needs a major overhaul and at the end of the day will still never be loved because it just smacks too much of Microsoft's ideas of "you rent the software, you don't buy it... so we're gonna force you to upgrade all the time"

Keep it as a beta delivery platform, that's all it's good for [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I have found so many bugs it makes me want to jump out a window. I feel sorry for people who have to make this s*** work on 50+ pcs at computer cafes.

- I close steam, try to open it again.... its still running. clt-alt del. now it works.

- My pc crashes alot due to another problem which i cant solve, its crashed a couple of times during updating and steam exes has deleted itself twice during a crash. So I had to reinstall.

- Im trying to download the program now, its coming up with an error saying the cache file is corrupt, fair enuf, my pc has crashed. I keep clicking "Flush file now", and it keeps coming up with the same error, this is for the 5th time....

- There are ads on the page where you dl. Thanks for forcing us to download software and then put ads in.

- Why does the program hang all the time? Its just stupid because you dont know whats going on. Normal programs have some sort of status of whats going on... it doesnt just f***ing hang.

A few of these problems might go away when there arent not so many people downloading it. But its still the biggest piece of s*** software ever. BTW, anyone have a valve forum where I can post this? [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

Steam is quite a good program for providing automatic updates to games, you cant possibly judge the speed of it when millions of people are trying to download from it at once, give it a chance and if it still crashing etc even when on a normal server load then im sure valve will sort the problem.

As for the Steam having to verify itself over the internet before you play CS, hence putting LANS's with no inet connection out of bounds, well that problem is being fixed and should be fine at the next update of Steam.

The only problem I have with 1.6 is that is totally rapes my fps, in maps that i used to get 100 or thereabouts I now get 70ish, and lets not even talk about my now 20fps on aztec :S

If you ask me 1.6 is simply 1.5 but with much s***ter fps, altho in saying that the shield is one of the best things to come into CS for a long while :D [ Comment: Report | IP: Logged ]

I started steam before I went to school, was done when I got back, had no major problems at all really.
One of the big problems seems to be steam still updating even after the main download is finished, meaning CS just hangs on the splash screen with a 'busy' mouse cursor for a while.
Once everyone has it, and the rush is over, I guess steam will be just like WON, in terms of speed and reliability. And like people have said, the full installer will surely still use steam to autheticate / login etc. you NEED a steam ID to play, so if anybody thinks its going to be the same at 1.5 is most likely in for a suprise.. CS players in general can’t tell their arse from their elbow. Ever since CS has gone mainstream there’s been massive queues, slow downloading and waiting when a new version comes out and people have just sat in silence and accepted that the FTPs are packed. NOT THIS TIME BUDDY! They have something to blame it on, enter Steam; sure the problem with slow downloads (or no downloads in most cases) is worse than ever before when a beta/version was released because more people are downloading it, what the f*** do you expect?

Sure you can say 'I paid for this game i demand to get my moneys worth!' Give it a rest you moron - your vacuum cleaner and television break from time to time, you don’t go to the internet and moan about that do you? Things don’t last for ever, lucky for us its only a temporary problem (unfortunately for your vacuum clears you’ll have to buy a new one – ever heard of the wall street crash?) In my 'limited' experience with steam its crashed twice - and the reason i aint come to the forums and flaimed the steam.exe is because i know why it crashed, true it could have been coded better, but if you care to take a look in your steamerrorlogs directory, all is explained (in my case anyway).

errorlog00001.txt

HMM why is steam crashing? Because the servers are overloaded. All they need to do is put some error handling in and hey presto!
